Indicators for the prescription of foot and ankle orthoses for children with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease

چکیده
Background Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is the most common inherited peripheral neuropathy and is associated with foot deformity, gait abnormalities and functional impairment. Orthoses are often prescribed for children with CMT, yet the indication and type of prescription is usually based on clinical judgement due to the lack of high quality research in this field. Therefore, the aims of this paper were to review the indications of commonly prescribed foot and ankle orthoses, and formulate a clinical algorithm for the optimal prescription of foot and ankle orthoses for children with CMT.

Narrative Review Prescription of foot and ankle orthoses for children with Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease: a review of the evidence
Background: Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease (CMT) is the most common inherited peripheral neuropathy and is associated with debilitating lower limb impairments and activity limitations. These impairments and activity limitations are potentially amendable to the prescription of orthoses, yet there is no universal, literature-based consensus to inform the decision making process of whether or not ort...
متن کاملBiomechanical effects of sensorimotor orthoses in adults with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease
BACKGROUND Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is an inherited neuropathy causing progressive weakness, foot deformity and difficulty walking. Clinical anecdotes suggest orthoses designed on the 'sensorimotor' paradigm are beneficial for improving gait in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. OBJECTIVES Investigate the effect of sensorimotor orthoses on in-shoe and lower limb biomechanics in adults with Charc...
متن کاملEffect of sensorimotor orthoses on rearfoot motion in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease: a pilot study
Background Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is the most common hereditary peripheral neuropathy, with an incidence of 1 in 2,500 [1]. CMT is characterised by the progressive weakening of the distal muscles and sensory loss of the limbs, particularly around the foot and ankle resulting in balance, walking impairments, cavus foot deformity and lateral instability [2,3]. Clinical anecdotes sugges...
متن کاملEvolution of foot manifestations in children with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease
Introduction Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is the most common genetic nerve disorder. The most prevalent form, CMT1A, is characterised by demyelinating neuropathy with progressive foot and ankle weakness, contractures and deformity. The wide range of foot/ankle manifestations in CMT1A complicates the assessment, diagnosis and therapy. We aimed to characterise foot and ankle strength, flexib...

BACKGROUND Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is a hereditary disease with signs of chronic non-progressive motor-sensory neuropathy which is characterised by symmetric muscle atrophy and weakness of the distal portion of lower extremities. AIM The aim is to present two cases with peroneal muscular atrophy, applied rehabilitation procedures and rehabilitation outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS Pa...
